ABSTRACT:
Nurses are placed in the unique position to serve as leaders, patient advocates, cultural brokers and educators. Evidence in the literature supports intrinsic and extrinsic influences on the evolving role of the nurse based on the variable she/he faces. It is important for us to understand the demands of the profession to meet the need of current times and prepare ourselves as leaders. Various leadership styles influence how we choose to lead. Traits of an effective leader must be understood and developed though an individualized plans for professional development. This presentation will analyze the extrinsic and extrinsic influences on the evolving role of the nurse in relationship to effective strategies for effective personal development plans. Discussion will address steps for developing personal plans for professional growth. The discussion will be focused to address needs identified in the audience to facilitate individualized 2, 5 and 10 year plans for professional growth.
This presentation is designed for beginner, intermediate and experienced health care provider.
Author will elaborate on creative strategies for individual leadership development as leaders and cultural brokers in the present evolving and dynamic healthcare environment where diversity may be defined from various perspectives.
BIOGRAPHY:
Jackie L. Michael, RN, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC hasbeen a Registered Nurse for 28 years and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner for 22 years. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing and Health. She teaches in the graduate program and designs online courses. She has practiced as a Nurse Colposcopist and serves as a Legal Nurse Consultant and Expert Witness. She has many presentations, papers, and posters to her credit. Dr. Michael leadership includes National Association of Indian Nurses of America President,Texas Nurses Association District 4 President, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing DT-102 Past President, Indian American Nurses Association of North Texas Past President and Advisory Committee Chair, Texas Nurses Association District 4 Board of Directors, TNA D4 Mock Trial Committee, and Elsevier Foundation’s Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy Program mentor.
